Donkeys were among the first domestic animals to be imported into Australia in the late 1770's. When they outlived their usefulness, they were released into Northern Australia's outback to roam free, where they proved their adaptability to the harsh climate by breeding in huge numbers, which resulted in the donkey officially being declared vermin.

The Australian donkey comes in a wide range of colour, with most being chocolate or black, other colours include greys of many shades, fawns and some chestnuts.

Donkeys are chosen for their easy temperament and are less inclined to shy, spook or bolt than a horse or a pony.

Like humans, donkeys thrive in the company of others, whether other donkeys or other animals.
